How can IFLA Europe be of use to a landscape architect?

IFLA Europe's aim is to co-ordinate initiatives among member associations. It represents both practitioners and students to the European Union. It also collects comparable information about the national professions and education. The IFLA Europe News site is also a source of information about current competitions; public and private project notices, aid projects and European norms.

Why become a member of an association?

In view of the Single Market it is vital to join and participate in national landscape associations; because these represent the landscape architecture profession and further and protect their interests at a national level. IFLA Europe aims to coordinate these activities and to defend the interests of the profession at a European level.

How can I get a job? (or a professional practice placement?)

IFLA Europe does not aim to act as a landscape employment agency. One source of information is the national associations, which publish lists of landscape practices. There are also architectural and technical recruitment agencies, which serve landscape architects and these advertise in the technical press.

How can I get in touch with other foreign practitioners or with members of related professions?

Related profession queries should be directed to the relevant national professional associations.

What are the differences of professional code of ethics from one country to another?

There is no pan European code of landscape professional practice. Each national association has its own code so to determine differences contact the individual national associations.

What is the legislation in effect in various countries?

IFLA Europe does not hold details of each country's national legislation. The Professional Practice committee does hold some information and we also advise you contact individual national associations.

What are the European Directives?

An EU Directive is a legal instrument (under the Treaty of Rome), which is binding upon the member countries to carry out. There are European directives on a whole range of matters affecting landscape architects ranging from Environmental Assessment to the provision of professional services (the General System directive covers landscape architects).

Enquiries about the protection of our title and about the profession?

The profession and its title are protected in part or completely in several European countries notably in Germany, The Netherlands, and Austria. In Italy a state registration association systems are being established since 2000. In Scandinavia, Portugal and the UK the position of landscape architects is well established but the title is not protected. In France the education is seen as of chief significance, i.e. DPLG (diplomé par le gouvernement). In these countries title 13 protected by state registration with Architectural Chambers.
